What is Rat Exclusion?

Rat exclusion is the process of sealing any cracks, gaps, holes, and crevices in your home to stop rats from entering and infesting your property. This is a more permanent and effective solution than using traps or poison, as it prevents rats from getting into your home in the first place.

Rats can squeeze through very small openings, so it is important to be thorough when inspecting your home for entry points. Some common entry points for rats include:

  • Gaps around doors and windows
  • Holes in the foundation
  • Cracked or missing bricks
  • Damaged screens
  • Gaps around pipes and wires
  • Openings in the roof

Once you have identified all of the entry points, you can seal them up using a variety of materials, such as:

  • Steel wool
  • Hardware cloth
  • Caulk
  • Expanding foam
  • Concrete

It is important to use a material that rats cannot chew through. Once all of the entry points have been sealed, you should be able to keep rats out of your home.

Here are some additional tips for rat exclusion:

  • Remove any food sources that might attract rats, such as pet food, trash, and birdseed.
  • Keep your home clean and free of clutter.
  • Seal up any cracks or holes in your foundation.
  • Repair any damaged screens.
  • Install weatherstripping around doors and windows.

Rat exclusion is a critical step in preventing a rat infestation. By taking the time to seal up all of the entry points in your home, you can keep rats out and protect your family from the health risks associated with rats.
